On this day in 1946, the United Nations Children’s Fund, or UNICEF was created by the United Nations general Assembly. Its original charter was to provide emergency food and healthcare to children in countries that had been devastated by World War II. Headquartered in New York City, UNICEF now provides long-term humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries.
On this date in 1936, un-coronated King Edward VIII of England abdicated his throne to marry "the woman I love," Wallis Simpson. Edward had forced a constitutional crisis by proposing marriage to the American divorcée Wallis Simpson. Although legally Edward could have married Mrs. Simpson and remained king, his various prime ministers opposed the marriage, arguing that the people would never accept her as queen. They might have been wrong; but in the end, love triumphed over politics.
